HOW TO DO A GRANNY SQUARE

SUE PINNER'S VERSION OF THE GRANNY SQUARE:

There are several versions of the Granny Square on the internet, some good and some not so good. The design of a granny square has holes, that do not need to be made bigger bye adding chain stitches between granny shell, unless extra stitches are required.

Starting with the granny shell first then completing the second granny shell and corner chain stitches means the join on each round moves across the side of the square...not good practice.

If you use more chain stitches than pull throughs you will have a line through your square that is ugly to look at. And also means a different start to each round, not good for a beginner.

My version is beginner friendly, easy, neat and starts and finishes in the same place every round. I also prefer a slightly padded centre circle for neatness and look.

SUE'S BEGINNERS GRANNY: US Terms, USING ONE COLOUR CONTINUED.

A finger wrap of 6 wraps, slide off finger carefully and work all stitches into circle.

ROUND 1: ALWAYS Start with a corner, ch5 [2ch as a dc, and 3ch as the corner], 3dc into circle, ch3, 3dc, ch3, 3dc, ch3, 2dc, into circle, sl st, into the 2nd ch, of the first 5ch, this completes the first round.

ROUND 2: Sl st, into the corner sp, and repeat, ch5, 3dc into first corner sp, 3dc, ch3, 3dc, into next corner sp, 3dc, ch3, 3dc into the next 2 corners, complete the round with 2dc, sl st, into the 2nd ch of first 5ch.

ROUND 3: Sl st, into the corner sp, and repeat, with 3dc, granny shell in the side sp,

again start in the corner, ch5, 3dc into same corner sp, 3dc into side sp, 3dc, ch3, 3dc, 3dc in the side sp, repeat for remaining sides, complete with 2dc, sl st, into 2nd ch, of first 5ch.

ROUND 4+: REPEAT ROUND 3. Each round with have another side sp to add a granny shell of 3dc in that too.

IF YOU WANT A VERY LARGE GRANNY SQUARE THROW:

Change direction every round, so that it dopant start to 'spin', crochet has a tendency to spin when worked continuously in the same direction. So by changing the directions each round, it stays perfectly Square, and also becomes double sided, no right or wrong side. Win, win.

Corner to Corner Granny Shell Blanket.

Believe it or not in all the years of crochet i've never made a corner to corner Granny shell blanket before Its a pattern that gives a lovely crisp square edge......Love that.

In my version, i've used a ch3 to start and tr, to finish but all granny shells are 3dc and i work into the spaces to start and finish.

Simple pattern Corner to corner Granny Shell blanket

Im using Hayfield Spirit and a 4mm hook for this sample. But it could be made with Aran of chunky weight yarns

US Terms

CH4
ROW 1: 3dc and 1tr, into 4th ch from hook. ch3, turn
ROW 2: 3dc, into first sp, 3dc, 1tr, into last sp. ch3 turn
ROW 3: 3dc into first sp, 3dc into next sp, 3dc,1tr, into last sp, ch3 turn
ROW 4+: REPEAT ROW 3, with 3dc into all middle sps.
Make the width of the blanket as big as you require.

TO MAKE THE SQUARED CORNER
ROW 1: Ch3, miss first sp, 3dc in all sps to end, finish with 3dc, 1tr in last sp. ch3 turn.
ROW2: 3dc in first sp, 3dc in every space to end, 1tr, into last ch3 sp, ch3, turn
ROW 3: CONTINUE UNTIL ITS AS LONG AS YOU REQUIRE.

REDUCING THE RECTANGLE OR SQUARE
Start with ch3 only [no granny shell in first sp] finish with 1tr, [no granny shell in last sp]

start with ch3 only to decrease

finish with tr only into last sp to decrease

Add a number of granny shells as a border to decorate, leave as it is or add a contrast stitch.

FOR MY FIRST EXPERIMENT
I am making a 30 row square for the centre....then a border and then more of the corner to corner granny triangles then another border....but it might change so watch out for updates.

make several squares and join in a more exciting pattern if you get bored with doing one giant blanket

Hardanger Blanket coming along....

The Hardanger Moroccan Blanket is well on its way to completion, very, very pleased with this one....new take on the Granny Square and inspired by the craft room wallpaper

Hope this one will be a single pattern release at the end of the month

The craft room is almost ready to move back into, all the wallpapering is finished now just the floor to clean, [some paint splashes] and the last coat of paint on the cloakroom door. The the vanity can be then be plumbed in and the water turned on. Been a month of disruptions but so pleased with it all.

DAY 7 CROCHET ADVENT CALENDAR

It's growing slowly 51" [130cm] long now, decided to make a wrap.....but with the possibility of turning it into a large blanket if i get fed up of it as a wrap

All the blended colours i've used in the Slipper Wrap in a hdc square.

BLUE TARTAN CAL: Sample progress

Progress on the Blue Tartan CAL...

i'm using blues and greys for this Tartan, its to go in my kitchen.

THIS POST IS A PRE-CAL POST

nothing cast in stone yet...

I've chosen 10 COLOURS and I'm using Merino. dk and 5mm hook

Merino is a springy yarn and fills the gaps well but Acrylic or wool or a mix can be used.

I've had a yarn sort out earlier this week, ready for the workshop at the end of November and found I have 3 boxes of Merino so plenty of choice for the new tartan samples.

As it's still a WIP, the 10 colours might change

This is what the repeat would look like if i stopped at 5 colours, but there are at least another 4 shades to go.....and it will change quite a lot..

its actually teal than the picture looks and at the moment it looks more like a check than a tartan lol.

TARTAN COLOUR FORMULA

I am hoping i can give you a Colour formula, so you can use your choice of colours, if that doesn't work then I will give you my Blue chart and another new one and the bright pink/green sample i showed you last week...
