Butterfly join and infill Square

Joining 4 eye motifs into a butterfly couldn't be simpler. For my Butterfly blanket i've used a....

 DK rainbow yarn and 4MM HOOK. 

Round 7 is in cream and the final join is in Charcoal

You need 4 eye motifs to ROUND 7 after the spear has been joined, round 8 is a granny shell join as you go round.

Granny Shells are 3dc. Join is a sl st to replace the ch1, and worked into first completed eye motif.

Butterfly Pattern.

EYE PATTERN above to round 7 after the spears.

ROUND 8: First Eye motif, complete the granny shell round, att. cream yarn in the point of an eye motif, 3dc, ch3, 3dc, in same point sp, ch1, 3dc in next sp, repeat for all 21sps, 3dc ch3 3dc in second point, 3dc in next 21sps, sl st, to complete. 

[23 granny shell each side]

ROUND 8: To joining the 2nd completed eye motif, a stitch mark can be helpful in the first joining space.

Att, Charcoal/black yarn in either point,  3dc, ch3, 3dc, in ch3 point, ch1, 3dc, in first sp, repeat in next 12sps, [total 15 granny shell on one side joined], 

sl st into 16th sp, of first completed eye, 

join as you go using a sl st, instead of 1ch st, between each of the next 9granny shells, complete the ch3 3dc at the second point. complete the second side of the second eye, with 3dc ch1, to end.

3rd Eye: Join in the same way to the 2nd Eye

4th Eye: Join in the same way but join from the point to the 1st eye to make a Butterfly.

Make as many Butterflies [4 eyes make one butterfly], as you want for the size of blanket you want, 4 or 6 full butterflies or make a central 2 butterflies and then add half butteries to the sides..depending on the size you want.

Joining them together is always joined with 9 granny shells 

 INFILL SQUARE 

I have used a dramatic Rainbow Yarn for my Butterfly Blanket and continued with the dramatic black and white effect for the infill square.

But i know lots are using their stashes and using vastly different colours.

So I have left the colours for you to decide, but the 4th 5th and then the 6th joining round i would suggest need to be a strong contrast and the same for each square.

  NOTE: Each round can be the same colours or a different colour, except round 3 [cream] this will bring you blanket together.

To make the circle into a square the 4th round uses a mix of 

tr, [corners] and dc [sides] in one round

INFILL SQUARE PATTERN

Finger wrap of 10 wraps, This will give a slightly padded centre to your infilled square.

ROUND 1: 12sc into circle, sl st to complete. [12sc]

ROUND 2: Att yarn in any st, ch2 counts as first dc, dc, in same st, 2dc, in each st, sl st to complete.[24dc]

ROUND 3: Att cream yarn in any sp between pairs of dc, ch2 counts as first dc, 2dc in the same sp, 3dc between each pair of dc to end, sl st to complete. 

[36dc or 12 granny shells]

ROUND 4: Att. charcoal/black yarn in any sp, between granny shells, ch6, counts as first tr, and ch3 sp, tr, into same sp, [corner], ch3, dc into next sp, ch3, dc into next sp, ch3, tr, ch3 tr into next sp, repeat to end, sl st to complete, cont. in charcoal/black [ 4 corners. 4 sides]

ROUND 5: Cont. in same colour, ch2 counts as first dc, 2dc, ch3 3dc in corner sp, 3dc in side sps, 3dc, ch3, 3dc in corner sps. repeat to end, sl st to compete.

[5 granny shell of 3dc each side]

ROUND 6: Join as you go round. Att cream in any corner sp, ch2 counts as first dc, 2dc, ch3, 3dc in same corner sp, 3dc in next 4 sps, repeat, 3dc, ch3, 3dc in corner sps, 3dc in each side sp,

[6 granny shells each side of 3dc]

JOIN AS YOU GO WITH THE SECOND AND THIRD SIDES OF THE SQUARE, INSETTING THEM INTO THE DIPS ON EACH SIDE OF YOUR BUTTERFLY.

6 Granny shells to join on 2 sides. This will leave 9 Granny Shells each side to join butterflies together.

JOINING BUTTERFLIES

Joining a second Butterfly to the first you must remember to join the eye motifs to each other in the butterfly pattern 

AND JOIN TO THE FIRST BUTTERFLY MADE.

ALL butterflies are joined with 9 granny shells and all squares are joined with 6 granny shells...24 granny shells on each side of each EYE MOTIF.

This simple, 2 round motif makes a fabulous delicate scarf...another pattern that would use up all those tiny ends of yarn mix with a ball or two of a background colour to make a pretty little Lacey Scarf....resembling a Celtic Cross in a circle

MINI OCTAGON TURNS HEXAGON

NEW HEXAGON WHEEL PATTERN

Finger wrap of 4 wraps.

Round 1: ch2 counts as first dc, 17dc into wrap, sl st, to complete. [18dc]

Round 2: ch3, counts as first dc and ch1 sp, 1dc ch1 in next st, repeat to end, sl st, into first ch3 sp, to complete. [18 spokes]

Round 3: 2sc in each ch1 sp, sl st to complete. [36sc]

Round 4: ch2, counts as first dc, dc in next 5 sts, ch2, dc in next 6sts, repeat to end, sl st, to complete. [6 sides x 6 dc]

Round 5: sc, in each st, sc, ch3, sc, in corner sps, sl st to complete. [8sc each of 6 sides]

JOIN AS YOU GO IN every stitch or just in the corners of in corners and after 4sc stitches.

No in fills required for a Hex pattern 

ORIGIANL OCTAGON PATTERN

An Octagon with an in fill

USA Terms

DK, 4mm Hook

Aran 5mm hook

Chunky 6mm hook or 2 strands of dk

 MINI OCTAGON MOTIF

Magic Circle or finger wrap or Ch6, sl st into a circle.

Round 1: 16 dc into the circle, sl st to complete round.

Round 2: chain 4 as first 'spoke', *dc into next st, ch 2, repeat from * until you have 16 'spokes', sl st to complete round.

Round 3: 2sc in each chain space, sl st to complete round.

Round 4: attach yarn in any stitch, 1dc in the next 4 sts, ch3, 1dc in next 4 sts, sl st to complete round.

Join as you go side by side, will give quite a large 'hole' this can be left or filled with a small square.

Filler Pattern

A very simple granny square of 4dc per side.

Ch4, sl st into a circle.

Round 1: chain 2 as first dc, 3 more dc (4 in total), ch2, sl st though joined motifs, ch2, repeat for all four sides.

MINI CAL BLANKET UPDATE: Rule of 12 Scrap Yarn Blanket.

How is it going? How many circles have you made so far? Are you making a blanket a wrap

 or just a cushion?

My blanket is well underway joined 3 rows yesterday and have 3 left to join then the border

 This blanket has been made from a recycled wip, that I never completed and in the tidy up i found all the circles so decided it would make a great 

New Rule of 12 Scrap blanket....working for me so far

 When i started the original project it was based on all the colours i had in my stash at that time,  I could probably add another 50+ today!

 or do a complete blanket using just the shades in one colour...how time has flown and the stash grown 

My Wrap is completed with the 5 sets of 9 square blocks, just needs the edging stitch to complete it

PART 6: RULE OF 12, SCRAP YART MINI CAL

Hows everyone getting on do you have some of your groups of 9 squares done yet?

5 sets of colours for you to have worked on over the weekend for a wrap, if you are making a blanket then you will need 9 squares in 9 block so 9 different groups of colours.

JOINING THE CIRCLES TOGETHER

US Terms as always 

 Lay out your 9 x 3 round circle in the colour group so you know which one is next to each other 

Att. joining yarn in any stitch, ch2 counts as first dc, 1dc in next 2 sts, ch3 1dc in next 3sts, ch3, repeat to end sl st to complete [ 12 X 3dc, 12 x ch3 loops]

 join with a sl st replacement for the middle ch st, work from top down hook the yarn and pull through both the ch3 loop and the st to att. 2 squares together as picture below, join 2 loops together on each join 

 When the first circle is complete then join the next one to the first one using a replacement sl st for the 2nd ch st in the 3ch sts, as above.

 Join 2 ch3 loops together on each side as below

 Join the circles in 3 lines of 3 motifs

 leaving one ch3 loop free between each join of 2, ch3 loop, on each square.

 Make sure you do leave one ch3 loop free when joining them in rows of 3 

 you must leave one ch3 loop free on each side for the in fill squares as below picture 

 so that you have a square with 4 loops x 3ch, one on each side ready to join the infill squares in PART 7

 join together with 2 loops on each side leaving one loop free between joins

ORIGINAL 8 PETAL GRANNY SQUARES PATTERN

WRAP OR A THROW 

YARN: Rooster Aran in a selection of colours about 16, 4 in shades of green 

Black Aran as background

HOOK: 5mm

Ch5, sl st into circle, magic circle or a finger wrap of 4 wraps.

ROUND 1: 16sc into circle, sl st to complete (16sc)

ROUND 2: 8 Cluster sts. 2dc in first st, 2dc in second st, cluster tog, one in every 2 sts, with ch3 between each cluster making the 'FLOWER' sl st, to complete. (8 petals)

ROUND 3: 3dc ch3 3dc in the first corner, ch1 3dc in side sp, ch1 repeat for all sides, sl st to complete. (3granny shells for each side)

ROUND 4: join as you go black round. 3dc ch3 3dc in first corner, ch1 3dc ch1 3dc ch1 side, repeat for all sides, sl St to complete. ( 4granny shells for each side)

Make row of 3 motifs 13" (33cms) x about 14 rows may be 15 rows for a wrap around 60" (52.5cm)

NEW LACEY JOIN AS YOU GO

Isn't that different, just repeat the same
3dc, ch3, 3dc, in the side space as well as the corners, join together using the middle ch st by replacing with a sl st into the square before 

Another Book 1 Granny Squares update option

A Slightly modified pattern from page 116 of my book 1 Granny Squares book... with a more lacy join for a totally different look to the square. Made in pastel shade of several brands of stone washed yarn and a  4mm hook

Differences from book: start with my favourite finger wrap 
4dc clusters instead of 3dc.

Use 2 colours for each square.

OPTION 1:

Round 4: Corners of 3dc ch3 3dc, ch7 sides, join in corners and 4th ch on sides as a sl st. 

 OPTION 2:

Round 4: Corners of 3dc ch3 3dc, ch7 sides.

Round 5: 3dc, ch3 3dc, in corners and both side space, worked over the ch7 of round 3, repeat for each side.

 OPTION 3: 

make the centre motif with a finger wrap and 4dc clusters for round 3

Round 4: att. second col. in any sp, ch5 sc in next sp, repeat to end

Round 5: 6dc ch3 picot in corner 6dc sc in next ch5 sp, ch5, sc in next ch5 sp, repeat 

 Love the centre pattern using this method. Join as you go using the 

Always Love the secondary lacy patterns that appear when you join 4 or more together
